It’s Day 19 of our Christmas Advent Calendar!
This month, we’re sharing special deals, festive classroom inspiration, and holiday-themed activities up until the 24th of December, so make sure you’re following us on Facebook and Instagram so that you don’t miss a single day!
Are you looking for something to do at home with the kids these school holidays? Parents and teachers alike are loving our new Book monster decodable readers collection.
Decodable readers are easy-to-use books, written for beginner readers, that have been written in such a way that they help younger readers with phonics and sound mastery through segmenting and blending of the alphabetic code.
Perfect for holiday reading at home, our decodables will foster an early love of reading through engaging stories and thoughtful artwork, while also equipping readers with essential skills to prepare them for the next school year.
But what makes the Book monster decodable readers collection particularly special is that the range of stories are varied.
While existing decodable readers on the market can lack variety due to the required structure and emphasis on word and sound recognition, our collection has been developed to contain a wide assortment of stories that span all 44 phonemes, so children can work to master three rewarding levels of focus sounds, or read at their own pace.
Curious about our decodable readers and how our stories are different? Take a look at a few of our staff favourites from the new range:
The pit (Sound pattern: s a t p i m c )
With its charming illustrations and mischievous characters, The pit is sure to delight young learners. Follow along as a playful dog and a group of clever cats engage in all sorts of shenanigans. It is the perfect read for kids who love a good laugh and a bit of adventure!
How to use it: The pit is part of Set 1 - 4 (Basic code), where students move from reading single CVC words and phrases to simple sentences. This is a great book to start with if your readers are beginner readers new to phonics skill mastery.
In all Basic code sets, students are also exposed to a small number of words that are not yet decodable at this level or that include irregular grapheme–phoneme correspondences. These are practised using the text on the inside front cover before students begin reading.
A day at the maze (Sound pattern: /ay/ a ai ay a_e)
A day at the maze is an adorable story following Jay the rat and April the snail’s day in the maze. Together, the two best pals get up to all sorts of activities together, such as playing chase, escaping the rain, and eating yummy foods.
How to use it: A day at the maze is part of the Extended code set, where students learn more complex word structures such as CCVCC and CCCVC. This level-two book is for more confident readers who are ready to learn long vowel sounds, vowel teams, or diphthongs.
The bull that would not pull (Sound pattern: /oo/ oo u oul)
The bull that would not pull is a fun tale about a lazy bull who discovers the joy of helping others. At first, the bull is reluctant to lend a hand to a poor farmer and his cows with some work around the farm. But as the story unfolds, we see that he learns an important lesson – that helping others can be a truly rewarding experience.
How to use it: The bull that would not pull is part of the Complete the code set, which is intended for advanced readers learning controlled vowels or alternative graphemes used to represent sounds.
A Roaring Success In Your Classroom…
Book monster decodable readers are short, fun stories that can be incorporated into any program that already exists in the classroom.
Plus, they’re effective in their role of developing sound mastery, since the internal illustrations are not overly colourful or distracting like other readers. These playful graphics enhance the story rather than tell the story, allowing the focus to be on decoding the text.
We also know how important accessibility is, which is why our readers are printed on low-glare sand-coloured paper to support readers with sensory challenges.
Explore the full range and inspire your beginner readers to participate in holiday reading at home with our Book monster decodable readers collection today.
