Summer holidays are just around the corner, which means fun, festivities and well-earned relaxation! As the year ties up, no doubt classrooms are filled with the buzz of excited children (and relieved teachers).
To help you finish the year and reflect on its joys and challenges, here is an assortment of fun Christmas and general activities that students are sure to love. It is important to ensure that students are able to participate in activities appropriate for them, and that no-one is excluded.
Letters to Santa
For those who celebrate Christmas, letters to Santa are a great way to not only practise writing, but also to teach writing for a purpose; an important skill which is transferrable throughout school and beyond.
Write a letter of thanks
Students choose a family member, carer, friend or other special person in their life, and write a letter thanking them for how they have enriched the student’s life.
Concentrate on the giving aspect
This is a great activity to encourage students to reflect on their own fortunes and consider what they’d like for others. This could be extended to gift-making; there is something very special for children about proudly presenting handmade gifts to their loved ones, and this doesn’t need to be limited to a special occasion.
Celebrate the year that has been
Each student writes on a small piece of paper their favourite thing that has happened during the year—e.g. a class activity or excursion, a friend they have made—and places it into a jar. The teacher can then read these out. This activity provides good practise in writing as well as providing an opportunity for reflecting and bonding.
